'Sharknado' scores tweets but not viewers

Sharknado sure was a social-media magnet Thursday night. Syfy's latest B-movie, about sharks swept up from the sea in a tornado to wreak havoc on Los Angeles, drew 387,000 mentions on social media, mostly on Twitter, marking the channel's "most social" program ever.
But that didn't translate to Nielsen ratings. Only 1.4 million viewers watched the movie, a typical audience for the channel's cheese-fests, proving yet again that Twitter can be an echo chamber among a few cheering loudly.
Celebrities including Mia Farrow, Michael Chiklis, B.J. Novak and Elizabeth Banks were among those who tweeted during the film. Farrow even jokingly posted a photo of her with author Philip Roth, suggesting the two were at a viewing party. (They weren't.)
But how could they resist Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) chain-sawing his way through a shark's belly after being swallowed whole? Or Tara Reid (American Pie) frantically trying to escape danger?
Syfy, pointing to the Twitter appeal as evidence of "enormous popular demand," has scheduled a repeat for Thursday at 7 p.m. ET/PT. Get your shark repellent ready
